"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." Who doesn't love that line by Mandy Patinkin's character in The Princess Bride? This has nothing to do with my name - I just love the line.
My name is Zane Caplansky and I love it. Zane is a Muslim name. It means "good, beautiful or strong" depending on the context. It is a popular name in Iraq and Malasia. I love being a Jewish person with a Muslim name. I am named for Shaner Zalman Duchman, my father's maternal Grandfather and by all accounts a remarkable man.
I was born Caplan but changed it back to the ancestral name although i changed the spelling. Benjamin Caplanski shortened our family name when he arrived in Canada perhaps in order to fit in better with the anglo society he found here. i decided to change it back for two reasons:
1. Caplansky sounds like a great Jewish Deli name
2. It made a statement about embracing my authenticity
My middle name is Gabriel. Zane Gabriel Caplansky. Bumps and grinds off the tongue, doesn't it?
Kevin Zemnickis tried to nickname me "Sledgehammer" but it never really stuck.
